Oak Ridge National Laboratory – ORNL – Established in 1943 as part of the Manhattan Project, ORNL is a U.S. Department of Energy national laboratory that works with industry to continually address today’s most urgent R&D needs.

ORNL maintains a staff of over 5,700 people, including many top scientists and engineers, with an annual budget of $2.4 Billion. To date they have been awarded 825 patents and are the recipients of 225 “R&D 100” awards.

Dr. Kyle Saleeby is an R&D Staff Member in the Manufacturing Automation and Controls Group. He’s currently leading an effort to develop advanced ‘hybrid’ additive and subtractive work cells using a Tormach robot and CNC milling center located at the Manufacturing Demonstration Facility.

The research team was seeking a robust offline simulation software capable of simulating both the CNC and robot additive/subtractive applications within a digital cell environment. Mr. Saleeby reached out to Roboris, a leading manufacturing software development company basedin Pisa,Italy.

The Roboris product line branded as Eureka, provides a true “3D digital twin” for both CNC machine tools and robots. This includes real time simulation of both additive and subtractive applications.

Eureka can detect and fix program errors such as collisions, singularities, and tool limits. Additionally, the Eureka platform provides integration opportunities with leading CAM software.

Mr. Saleeby said: “ORNL is committed to working with industry to advance the state of the art in advanced manufacturing. This type of collaborative effort to develop integrated toolpath, process, and trajectory planning is essential for rapid testing of advanced manufacturing techniques.”
